The History of Juneteenth
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.
On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared that all slaves in the Confederate states were free. However, it took over two years for the proclamation to be enforced in Texas, the last Confederate state to surrender.
On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers finally arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that the slaves were free. This day is now celebrated as Juneteenth.
